Ibon Gutierrez Blanco studied the Degree in Primary Education at the University of the Basque Country, during which he carried out various volunteer activities in Bilbao, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, El Ejido (Almería) and Ouarzazate (Morocco), with people at risk of social exclusion. It is worth mentioning that the theme of his final degree project was education for sustainable development.
Later he moved to Madrid to do the Master’s Degree in Psychopedagogy at the Complutense University of Madrid, with the intention of learning more about inclusive education and specific educational needs. The practices of this master’s degree were carried out in the EDUCO Foundation, where he acquired special interest in learning methodologies that advocate the participation of students and the opening of educational centers to their nearby territory. Thus, he was interested in learning-service, the subject of his master’s thesis.
Once he finished his master’s studies, he started the Doctorate in Education at the Autonomous University of Madrid. The doctoral thesis that he develops deals with the development of competencies in sustainability through learning-service in teacher training.
He is also a collaborating researcher, with his thesis directors Pilar Aramburuzabala and Rosario Cerrillo, in the project “Education and social innovation for sustainability. Training in Spanish universities of professionals as agents of change to face the challenges of society “. Which is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and coordinates the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
He currently works in the National Center for Innovation and Educational Research (CNIIE) of the Ministry of Education, in the Educational Support Project for Special Educational Needs and Education for Development thanks to a training and research grant.
