I International Congress of Human Rights, Democracy, Culture of Peace and Nonviolence – DEMOSPAZ 2019

The next I International Congress of Human Rights, Democracy, Culture of Peace and Non-Violence (DEMOSPAZ), organized by the University Institute of Human Rights, Democracy, Culture of Peace and Nonviolence (DEMOSPAZ), will be held on May 29th, 30th and 31th, 2019.

The current world faces political, social, economic and cultural challenges that require urgent responses. The rise of ultranationalist and xenophobic governments puts at risk democracy, multilateralism and respect for human rights. Violence is expressed in multiple ways, from aggression and war, but also from structures that perpetuate poverty and social inequality and prevent the development of the human being. Overcoming relations of violence, peacefully transforming conflicts and moving towards a culture of peace is urgent and requires the commitment and involvement of the academic community in articulation with social movements.

The purpose of the congress is to generate a space for meeting and debate between researchers and researchers, social movements and civil society organizations on theoretical and practical aspects, challenges and challenges related to human rights, democracy, the culture of peace and nonviolence , as well as formulate proposals that contribute to forming peaceful, inclusive and respectful societies with human rights.

The congress will be structured in three axes: Culture of Peace, Democracy and Human Rights organized in panels of debate between personalities of national and international prestige, round tables with representatives of civil society organizations and presentation of communications about experiences and academic work related to the themes of the congress. Communications will be published in a Book with ISBN number.

The DEMOSPAZ Institute (Human Rights, Democracy, Culture of Peace and Nonviolence) brings together prestigious intellectuals and specialists in multiple areas of knowledge. It is a collaboration space between the faculty of the Autonomous University of Madrid, professionals and experts in the field of human rights and culture of peace of other universities, centers and research institutes. It is chaired by Federico Mayor Zaragoza, president of the Culture of Peace Foundation and Rafael Garesse, rector of the Autonomous University of Madrid.
